Gary Suganuma is an attorney with extensive experience in litigation, government law, and regulatory compliance. He earned his J.D. from the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law in 1997. He also holds a B.B.A. in Marketing from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
Mr. Suganuma has built a distinguished career in public service. He has been the Director of the Hawaiʻi Department of Taxation since December 2022. Prior to that he served as a Deputy Attorney General in the Department of the Attorney General’s Education Division from 2011-2017, and as Supervising Deputy Attorney General in the Attorney General’s Tax & Charities Division from 2017-2022.
Prior to his career in public service, Mr. Suganuma was an attorney in private practice where he handled civil litigation cases involving personal injury, commercial litigation, product defects, contract disputes, and design and construction issues. Mr. Suganuma was admitted to practice law in the Hawaiʻi courts in 1997, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in 2004, and in the U.S. Supreme Court in 2007.
The Government Affairs Committee (GAC) monitors legislative measures at all levels of government that may affect the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce, its members, or the business community in general.
