Mike Gleason, Executive director of Arc of Hilo, along with new members of the chamber board, were sworn in on June 22 at the annual Installation Dinner, attended by over 100 members and guests.
Mary Begier, outgoing president, turned the gavel over to the new president after delivering her valedictory, in which she thanked the board and chamber members for their support and hard work during her year as president. “I am proud to serve the Island of Hawai`i. I look forward to many exciting things to happen due to seeds planted by HICC this year.”
Gleason, in his remarks, spoke of his goals for the coming year. “Our current economic situation provides an opportune time for business leaders, our government leaders, educators, non-profit and workforce leaders to work together to bring economic stability to our Hawai`i Island communities.” He went on to say, “Let’s make this a year of action. In partnership and collaboration with the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry and KIAA, we will provide opportunities for those leaders to come together through forums centered on issues that affect our business community.”
Greg McMackin, head football coach at the University of Hawaii, was the guest speaker, and talked about his coaching philosophy and goals, urging everyone to step up and lead the community.
Special guests at the dinner, held at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, included Delbert Nishimoto, representing Senator Inouye, Representatives Jerry Chang, Clifton Tsuji, and Mark Nakashima from the Hawaii State legislature, Director of Research and Development Randy Kurohara, representing Mayor Billy Kenoi, and Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann.
